Pope Francis with a crowd of people

On March 13, 2013, a new Pope was elected to become the spiritual leader of more than 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide. From the moment he walked onto the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis began to take the whole world by storm with his humble personality and his passionate message of love and mercy.

Now, as we mourn his death, we give thanks to God for his papacy and for the impact he left behind on the world, especially his love for the poor and his compassion towards the marginalized of our society. He led the Church with a profound and urgent desire to bridge the gaps in society, to eliminate wars and corruption, and to build bridges among all people. As he said, "We must restore hope to young people, help the old, be open to the future, spread love. Be poor among the poor. We need to include the excluded and preach peace."

Midwest Theological Forum in collaboration with Rome Reports produced a documentary that brought together, for the first time, the words of Pope Francis to show the life experiences that led him to discover God’s mission for his life and the motivation behind his papacy.

Get to know the real Pope Francis, through his own words, as we follow him from his early years in Argentina, to his call to the priesthood, and to his election as Pope.

Pope Francis - Encountering Christ

Encountering Christ

Encountering Christ gives the reader a glimpse into the heart and mind of Pope Francis. It offers a selection of homilies, letters, and addresses delivered from 2009-2013 as archbishop of Buenos Aires. These texts contain many of the themes that have already emerged as central to Pope Francis’ pontificate: love for the poor, the dangers of a self-referential Church, and the need to “go out” and bring Christ to the world.
